Introduction:

National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is an exciting, biennial (every two years) three-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment for Catholic teenagers (Grades 9 – 12) and their adult chaperones. The schedule includes keynote addresses, concurrent and workshop sessions addressing a wide variety of topics. There are also opportunities for liturgy, reconciliation, prayer and worship, recreation and special activities such as concerts, exhibits, and the interactive thematic park.

If your parish/school has never attended NCYC in the past, know that this experience is one you and your youth will never forget!! It is most certainly a worthwhile and empowering experience for youth and adult chaperones alike! NCYC meets young people where they are at by giving them a positive experience of their faith through adoration, Mass, music, and seeing thousands of people worship the Lord under the same roof.  It is a powerful opportunity to see Jesus alive in the Church.  “Who is the Church?” “We Are.”  Come, explore and get to know Jesus!

Group Registration Process:

The National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry that organizes NCYC does not allow individuals to register for NCYC. All participants must register in advance as part of a diocesan group. Therefore as a Parish/School Representative, you need to consider the following:

  • Can you/your parish commit to the process of planning NCYC from start to the point of departure and return in November?

  • Will your parish/school offer fundraising in order to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for this experience? If so, how will that be organized?

  • How can your parish/school leadership and membership at large support the youth and adult chaperones that will go to NCYC? Through prayer? Encouragement? Financial?

Who attends NCYC?

NCYC is open to high school age young people (grades 9-12). NCYC has had as many as 28,000+ youth and adult participants. Most participants are Catholic. Many youth participants are leaders in their local parishes, schools and/or diocese, though many are just beginning to connect to their faith. Some attendees may have participated in previous national or international events such as the World Youth Day. Many are experiencing this type of gathering for the first time.

Why attend NCYC?

Youth attend NCYC because they want to:

  1. Learn more about themselves and their relationship to the Catholic Church

  2. Celebrate their Catholic faith

  3. Meet thousands of other Catholic youth

  4. Share beliefs and experience of being Catholic

  5. Recognize their role in the larger Catholic Church

  6. Gather on a national level

What about adult chaperones?

  • NFCYM requires that chaperones be 21 years or older.

  • Each Parish/School must secure their own group of chaperones for each group of youth attending.

  • If necessary due to smaller numbers, parishes/schools can “adopt” other youth with the approval of parish/school leadership.

  • Each parish/school must maintain a 1:7 ratio of adults to youth

  • If your group consists of male and female youth, you must have male and female chaperones.

  • For further clarification on chaperones, contact the Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry.
